Here's another disc from the Ponderosa Stomp record show. I wasn't looking for this one or even thinking about it, but this is a disc I have had an eye out for, for about 10 years.

p.s. Tech Note: I'm a record guy, not a computer guy. I've had a couple of requests from viewers asking me to post the songs at a higher bit rate. I've been recording them at a better quality not realizing that no matter what, when I post them to Hipcast they are automatically reset to 64 kbps. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've never seen this label before, nor have I ever heard of Johnny Acey, but how can you pass up a good blues tune about outer space?

Nappy Brown is one of the most powerful and unique R&B vocalists of all time. His gospel drenched style was an influence on Ray Charles, who famously covered Brown's song "Night Time is the Right Time". This is a double sided killer on Savoy from 1958.

Here is one of my favorite artists on one of my favorite labels. This is swamp blues perfection, with some typically oddball percussion and a great production sound by J.D. Miller.

You just don't see a whole lot of 45s on the Cobra label (at least I don't). I was quite pleased to find this one in good condition...

Here's a nice single from 1966 by one of my favorite singers, Percy Mayfield. This was put out on Ray Charles' Tangerine Records and the material that he recorded there at least equaled, if not surpassed in quality, the sides he recorded for Specialty in the fifties. All of the Tangerine recordings were compiled on a terrific CD called "Percy Mayfied his Tangerine and Atlantic sides" which I believe is now out of print. The photo above shows Percy in the studio with Ray. His facial injury from a horrific car wreck a few years earlier is clearly visible. BTW, yes that is Ray Charles playing organ on this track...

Deep Feeling

Chuck Berry
Deep Feeling
Chess 1653 - 1957

"Deep Feeling" is the flip of "School Day" and is a pretty radical departure from Chuck's usual sound. As we were speaking before of theme intros, I heard this song once a week for years when I was living in New Orleans as the start of "the Governor's mansion" show on WWOZ. Not once did I have a clue that it was a Chuck Berry song. That slow, languid tempo and that slide technique? Who woulda thought? Quite a revelation when I put this one on the player and thought: "Aha!, of course..."

p.s. a quick check of the 'OZ website reveals that the Governor is still doing his thing every Monday night from 10:00 to Midnight.
