You Crack Me Up

Charlie Baker
You Crack Me Up
Liberty - 55226

MP3 File
If you were somehow able to combine the humorous R&B vocal style of the Coasters with some wicked Lowman Pauling style guitar, you'd end up with this incredible little slice of R&B perfection.

Frankenstein Walk
Hi - 2161
1969
I figured I had better get this one up quick before any of my fellow bloggers had a chance to beat me to it. This is my absolute favorite Halloween 45 and one of my favorite 45s period. At the time I found this I had no idea who Gene "Bowlegs" Miller was, but the title was too great to resist. Of course when I listened to it, I stood with my mouth hanging open, not believing what I was hearing. I have since learned that Bowlegs Miller was a Hi records staffer and had a few one off singles of his own, of which this is one. Truly astounding...

I am going to try my best to make some time this month to post some of my halloween 45s. In the meantime here is a repost from early in this blog's history. Quite excellent.

If You Need Some Lovin'

Nappy Brown is one of the most powerful and unique R&B vocalists of all time. His gospel drenched style was an influence on Ray Charles, who famously covered Brown's song "Night Time is the Right Time". This is a double sided killer on Savoy from 1958.

Here is one of my favorite artists on one of my favorite labels. This is swamp blues perfection, with some typically oddball percussion and a great production sound by J.D. Miller.

This one's in pretty rough shape, but the excellence still shines through. Released in '66 on Huey Meaux's Tribe label.

This is one of my favorite 45s. Exactly what we're all about here at Jukeboxmafia. A great beat and solid musicianship, mixed with a large dose of humor. King Kong escapes from the zoo and travels to New York where he dances the monkey on top of the Empire State Building!

Cadence 1293 - 1956

Okay, now that the lawn is mowed, I have time to get to this. My fiancee Margaret requested this one, as it has been stuck in her head Lately. Archie Bleyer is best remembered as the founder of Cadence records and as the Everly Brothers' producer. He also put out some records of his own, most of which are bland, easy listening stuff. This little gem from 1956 however (from the pen of Steve Allen) is pretty damn great. I'd love to find a clean copy of this as this one is obviously very rough. A preview from this year's 2nd annual Jukeboxmafia Halloween CD.
